Failing is probably the most uncomfortable feeling anyone can experience. It can be humiliating, embarrassing, and demeaning all at once. Although, horrible failure can actually be the greatest teacher of all time. By default, it can slowly but surely chip away at all the excess, shedding the egos and pride an bringing forth humility, hustler and problem solver. It helps molds and shapes us through divine intention to help us reach our greater purpose. One thing I stand by is it’s easier to learn from failure than from success. It gives you the chance to analyze what’s not working, what you did wrong and what you can do better and do something about it. Basically, all great accomplishments, first come from failure. We believe that it is essential to growth in your personal life and business endeavors, think of it as a steppingstone for greater things. 

1.    It Creates Opportunity: with failure this can sometimes be overshadowed by hopelessness. But, you have to see the light at the end of the tunnel. With every drawback there is always a way to get 5 steps forward. Look for the opportunity where you are, not where you want to be.Start viewing failure as a learning opportunity, use the lessons you gain from it, and take the first steps to setting yourself up for success.

2.    It Builds Resilience: failing is one thing but getting back up is another story! Understand Your Vision 

Reflect on your why, focus on your goals, and what it is that you really want.This  will help give you clarity to get you back on track, and will reignite that fire that drives you to accomplish your desires. 

Tune into Your Innermost Self 

Work on reconnecting with your goals, you want to follow the path of least resistance. Ask yourself, “When is the time I feel most focused?” Once you figure that out, during that time execute your vision. For example, some people work better really early in the morning, others are more focused mid-day and believe it or not some actually like to stay up late and WORK! Decide which one is best for you!

Create Attainable Steps 

I know we have all heard of SMART goals, and it’s mentioned in also everything you read about staying focused. That’s because, it’s it works. If you feel like you are struggling w/ motivation, it can be daunting. The best solution is to break down the task into the smaller, easier to accomplish items. 

Follow A Plan

The best way to accomplish your goals is to actually have a blueprint for how you are going to get there, and also an actual step by step plan on how you will achieve them. Following a well thought out strategy will help you to be more organized and structured.

There’s going to be times in life where you are meant to be taking a lot of momentous action, just like there’s going to be times where we just can’t seem to find the flow. Focus on where you are now and where you want to be and go after that dream!

Make a list of 10 people you feel would bring value to your organization and make an effort to reach out to them and build an authentic and genuine relationship. 

3. Community Engagement: Honestly, if you learn how to effectively connect, then engaging and interacting should come easily for you! Find like-minded people and just communicate. Literally, just talk to them, engage in their content, send them messages, respond to their post and go to the meetups. Establish yourself a part of their society and build sincere relationships.   

4. Find Your Tribe: Once you start making those connections you WILL find people who you can connect with on a deeper level. They understand who you are and vis versa, they recognize the idea, appreciate the purpose and are invested in your vision.  These are the people that want to see you grow and will be there every step of the way!

5. Make Them Apart of the Team: When you find your tribe be sure to position them as thought leader and allow them to help you develop the brand. This will cultivate the organization, position you to obtain great feedback and understand your product from different perspectives which allows for more progression opportunities.

As an entrepreneur and first time, solo founder of a tech company. I’ve learned a thing or two about starting a business. I’ve been successful and I’ve failed. I’ve had weeks where I’ve kicked major a** and weeks where I haven’t. It really is a roller costar of emotions and feeling of achievement and disappointment. But here are a few things that I’ve learned to accept along the way.   

1. Mistakes Will Happen:

I had to understand that building a company is trial and error. I’m going to be honest; I had no idea what I was doing and for many of us, we don’t know anyone else who has gone before us, in our industry. At least I didn’t, which made things a bit more challenging to navigate. I just know I had a vision; a dream and I went after it! I failed, I did things completely backwards, upside down and inside out. I kept running into roadblocks and hitting brick walls. Eventually, I started to understand my industry better, actively learned and understood what needed to be done to get me where I needed to be and as time went on, I got better. Although, mistakes still did and still does happen, I’ve learned to be okay with that. I had to understand that I’m not going to be perfect during this journey and I learned to roll with the punches and take whatever is thrown at me. 

2. Be your Own Support System:

In the beginning stages of Lysten it was hard to find people who believed in the idea of a community to connect the way we envisioned. Believe it or not I got laughed at by a company I was hiring to work with us – talk about an ego killer, and still I proceeded. Just because someone else didn’t see my vision didn’t mean that it was not valid. It just wasn’t theirs to perceive. 

3. Building a Product is Hard, But Selling It Is Harder:

The easy part is creating the product, however once you have the product others must find value in it too. Creating a product without an audience is just a hobby. Creating a product and selling it to an audience is a business. Learning how to market your product is vital to the success of your organization. Play around with a few ideas and then execute, but “Build the Product and they will come” mindset is a recipe for disaster. 

4. Creating a Community Is Essential: 

If I’ve learned one thing it is finding people and building connections are essential to not only the growth but the validity and accomplishments of your business. Receiving adequate feedback, suggestions and support helps validate the idea and find real customers. 

5. Stay Committed: 

This is by far is the hardest part of the game. When you flop it’s easy to stop because you didn’t reach your goal, that’s practical. But when you fail and decide to keep moving forward, fall and get back up again, now that’s difficult, that’s tough and that builds character. I became more resilient and learned how much I’m actually built for, which is a lot more than I expected. “Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of it”.  

Overall, this journey has been nothing short of surprises. I’m still learning, still failing at some things and succeeding at others. I’ll let you all know when I really figure it out.

When I set goals and see them manifest into reality and start to take form and come alive. I start to feel as if I can do anything! To me, Goals manifest when you have fun with the process and carry it out with intense passion, action, focus and purpose.

Now, I know that some people are not as high strung and that’s okay I get it. I have a very strong “type A personality” that makes me very competitive, work-obsessed and achievement-orientated and I believe that is what plays a major role in the way that I carry myself when it comes to accomplishing my goals.

So How To Set Goals Like a Boss!?

• Find Your Purpose

Let’s first acknowledge that goal setting will put you on your path to your purpose! When setting goals, make it a point to write them down. Have your goals posted in a space that you look at every day, so that they are not out of sight. I for one! am a very simple person. If it is out of sight then it’s out of mind, point blank period. I will not remember to do it…. So, it helps me to have my goals somewhere where I know I am going to look every morning. This also increases the likelihood of accomplishing your goals if they are reviewed on a daily basis.

Most people have a constant craving to evolve and grow. SOO Seeking improvement in our career, relationships and self, is imperative to our happiness. No one wants to stay the same forever, if I had to stay in the same position or relationship status, for years on end without progression or advancement, there is no happiness in that. Whatever I do in life I do it with the intention of growth. Moving to the next level and achieving something greater than what I started with.   

• Set Micro Goals

Break your goals down into smaller steps that will help you achieve the bigger picture. But first you must remember to NOT get overwhelmed by the end goal. It’s easy to look at what you’re trying to accomplish and become afraid because of the amount of time, effort and resources it may take. But all you must do is think about what the larger goal is and work backwards. For example, if you want to accomplish your goals within the next 6 months, then write down what you need to do each month to achieve that goal. Then break it down even further and ask yourself what you need to accomplish each week in order to achieve your goal. Then lastly, what steps do you need to take each day? This may friend, will help you organize and plan your action steps accordingly. It’s almost like you are setting goals so small it’s impossible not to follow through.

• Accept Failure

Now I put this point in many of my podcast and videos because it’s imperative that ppl understand that there is NO STRAIGHT road to success and hard times will occur. Learn to understand everything will not go as planned and you have to fully recognize and acknowledge that fact. If you don’t, you will be easily unmotivated to follow through with your goals at the first sight of adversity. You have to keep going despite that. Always have a plan B, C and D if something does not go the way you want it, the first time…… I heard this quote once that stated, “ failure is the condiment, that gives success it’s flavor” to me that means you’ll appreciate it more, because you know what you had to do, to get to where you are.

• Focus On The Process Not The Results

Success is more than the end result. Often times, there are secondary gains to our primary goals. For example, let’s say you started a business, because you couldn’t find a job or because you kept getting terminated. As a result not only did you start a business, BUT you also learned and developed new skills to enhance your knowledge in your industry, you improved your self-esteem and you developed a work ethic that enhanced your curiosity for continuous improvement within your business. Secondary gains allow you to continue self-development and growth.

• Make Them SMART

Lastly, which is the most important of them all is to ensure your goals are SMART (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound). This is important because it helps you save time and energy by making the process of goal setting more efficient and most importantly PRODUCTIVE. It helps you avoid spinning your wheels! Smart goals help you with paying attention to the approach as well as focus on the details. When you begin to break your goals down into smaller actions to fulfill the “measurable” and “attainable” SMART criteria, try to include actions that are as small and as specific as possible. The smaller the steps you need to make, the easier it will be to move forward and progress and build momentum.
